In the workplace, there are many people from all walks of life. Each person is unique and brilliant in their own ways. Here at Emergenetics International, we live and appreciate each and everyone’s profile. We honor them in the way each person wants to be honored. Learning and understanding how we think and behave is important for clear communication throughout our organization.
The Social thinking attribute is one of four thinking attributes Emergenetics focuses on. Social thinkers are intuitively aware of those around them. They combine intuitive thought with love of people. Most of the time, these thinkers wear their heart on their sleeve and are empathetic to others around them. If you are working with someone who has a preference in Social thinking keep in mind they are energized by: team work, details of people, telling stories and making sure EVERYONE is happy. If you have an opportunity to celebrate someone with a Social preference, surely you will want to plan something with others, make it personalized, and genuine.
- Personalization– Finding a personalized gift for a Social preference is important as it can show that you care about them by listening to their stories and tune into things they enjoy. An example for this would be getting their favorite candy and putting it on their desk.
- Genuine– It’s important to be your true self when you are working with a Social preference. By being genuine, you are building trust with that person. An example of a genuine gesture for a Social preference is asking a team of co-workers to write one positive way this person has impacted the team. Surely this will be a kind gesture this Social brain will hold on forever (literally).
- Including Others– Speaks to the preference itself. A Social preference enjoys team building and connecting with others. An example of including others is offering to host a team lunch off site, possibly at this person’s favorite restaurant. Remember, this Social thinking attribute will want to make sure that everyone will equally enjoy the outing and be sure that everyone is on board going to the restaurant she/he has picked.
All three of these examples will help a Social preference person feel needed and a sense of connectedness in the workplace. Understanding what motivates and drives your employees will make the workplace a more peaceful and positive environment. Celebrate the gifts of your teammates. You will be surprised to see how these small gestures can improve a team’s performance when you really understand each individual’s thinking preferences.
